Ios
Island Greece
South of Naxos and north of Santorini, Ios covers 108 square
kilometers. Its highest point is Mount Pyrgos, at 717 meters. Since the 1960s
people have been lured to the island by its beautiful beaches and the intensity
of its nightlife (there are numerous bars and clubs). Now , however, the
Municipal Authorities are making strenuous efforts to attract another more
cultured, nature-loving clientele. Its reputation as a party-island is based
above all on Ios town (Hora), the main village. The mayor of Ios has had an
open-air theatre built near the windmills which seats 12000 people and has a
view to the sea. Cultural events are held here every summer. Elsewhere Ios
offers peace and quiet to those who want it. It has countless little coves and
bays containing isolated beaches. Inland, the landscape is gentle and rolling,
there are plenty of walking trails. Tradition has it that it was here, on the
slopes of Mount Pyrgos, that Homer died.
